Nicolaas Johannes (Niek) Grové

Chairman and Non-Executive Director

Prof. Niek Grové is an accomplished legal scholar and academic leader, currently affiliated with the Department of Mercantile Law at the University of Pretoria. He holds a BA, LLB, LLM (cum laude) from the University of Pretoria and an LLD from the University of Johannesburg. Prof. Grové’s expertise lies in Contract Law and Consumer Credit Law, and he has extensive experience in teaching a wide range of commercial law subjects. After over 18 years as Registrar of the University of Pretoria, he returned to academic work and has held leadership roles including Director of the Insurance Law and Governance Unit. He has published extensively in recognised law journals, supervised doctoral candidates, and contributes to higher education governance nationally.

Chris Oberholzer

Executive Director

Chris Oberholzer is a seasoned and accomplished executive with extensive experience in leadership, strategy, finance, and business development. He holds a B.Com Accounting and an MBA from the University of Pretoria. Chris previously served as Non-Executive Group Chairman of Subtropico and, at the request of shareholders, took on an interim executive role to help position the business for growth.

Prior to this, he spent 15 years at Naspers and the MultiChoice Group, where his most recent role was Executive Head of Strategy, Business Development and Product. He has a proven track record of driving revenue growth, leading high-impact strategic initiatives, managing complex operating businesses, and executing strategic deals.

Mmathebe Annah-Faith (‘Thebi’) Moja

Non-Executive Director

Thebi Moja completed a BCom degree at Fort Hare University and a Masters degree in Business Leadership through UNISA. She began her career as an external auditor, and has held various positions in a broad variety of economic sectors. She has worked as an Accounting Authority, as well as part of Audit Committees and Risk Management teams.

Thebi has served in the public and private sectors, and has been involved in Communications, Economic Development, Rural Development and Land Reform, Health, Provincial Treasury, Marine Living Resources, Community Safety, Arts and Culture, Infrastructure and Investment Holdings to name a few.

Marius Meyer

Non-Executive Director

Marius Meyer is the Founder and Executive Director of Exchange Sponsors. Exchange Sponsors is a registered Sponsor, Designated Advisor and approved Independent Expert with the JSE. Exchange Sponsors listed 25 companies on the JSE and has been involved in a number of fundraising activities, for listed and unlisted clients.

Marius specialises in providing corporate finance advice for restructurings, mergers and acquisitions and is also actively involved in a number of private companies as shareholder and director. Marius and his wife are also farming on a family farm in the Karoo.

Burger Botha

Non-Executive Director

Burger Botha is a South African business leader and entrepreneur with extensive experience in investment management and corporate leadership. He previously served as Co-CEO of Subtropico Limited, where he played a key role in strategic and operational growth. He has also founded and led multiple ventures, including ZIRE Africa and Papillon Perfume, where he is currently Founder & CEO. Beyond executive roles, Burger holds directorships with several companies such as Constantia Ondernemings and Natsure Underwriting Managers. His background includes finance and business strategy, supported by academic credentials from the University of Pretoria.

PJ van Dyk

Non-Executive Director

PJ van Dyk is a South African technology entrepreneur and executive, known for co-founding and leading Glucode, a digital agency specialising in mobile app development, UX/UI design, and software solutions. Under his leadership as CEO, Glucode has partnered with organisations across industries to build impactful digital experiences and has been recognised as one of the Best Places to Work in South Africa. PJ’s journey into tech began with a passion for solving business challenges through automation, which evolved into pioneering app development from the early days of the App Store.

Pieter van der Walt

Chief Financial Officer

Pieter is the Chief Financial Officer of the Subtropico Group, responsible for treasury, risk management and the overall finance function. He is a Chartered Accountant and completed his articles at PWC’s financial services and entrepreneurial advisory divisions. Although relatively young, Pieter has 15 years’ experience in external audit and corporate finance. Having started at Subtropico as a financial manager, he has extensive knowledge of the business from the ground up. Pieter has an inspiring leadership style enabling him to manage a sizeable finance function. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family and exploring what South Africa has to offer as tourist destination.
